In Buda near the Batthany square, stand the church Szent Anna, one of the most beautiful baroque buildings in Hungary. In 1626, next to the church a one story building was built, which was bought in 1720 by a man who was a wood worker. He ran a pub in it and it became beloved by the sailors of the Danube.
In 1973 the three hundred and fifty year old building was renovated for the centenary of the amalgamation of Pest-Buda-Obuda and the elegant Angelika café was opened. The “Angelika” soon became a favorite place for writers, poets, and performers. This discretely elegant, but also snug place was more than a café: it was a small realm of spirit and art. A peaceful little island, which protected the memories of the past in our rushing world.
Angelika, originally famous for its coffee and cakes, was a place for people to come together and talk. It was the icon of community during those times. Now Angelika is more than a simple coffee shop, it is an international restaurant where you can also feel the the past and culture of Hungary.
Some of the specialties are Gulash soup and Hungarian beef stew. The most well known specialty are the several homemade desserts and variety of coffees. Angelika works to give a comfortable, homely feel and even serves homemade breakfast.
There was a total of 350 seats, 200 outside on the beautiful and open terrace and 150 inside that gives a cozy atmosphere. At Angelika you can pay with Hungarian Forint (HUF), Euro, or a credit card.
