The 1986 Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix was the first Formula One race to take place behind the Iron Curtain. Held at the twisty Hungaroring in Mogyoród near Budapest, the race has been a mainstay of the racing calendar. The first Grand Prix saw 200,000 people spectating, although tickets were expensive at the time.

Due to the nature of the track, narrow, twisty and often dusty because of under-use, the Hungarian Grand Prix is associated with processional races, with sometimes many cars following one another, unable to pass.

The Hungarian Grand Prix is held in the middle of summer, which is usually hot and dry in this region. Its first wet Formula 1 race was in 2006. The Hungaroring circuit is normally dusty due to underuse throughout the rest of the year and its sandy soil. As the F1 circuit track is in a valley you can see about 80 percent of the race track from any point.
